For more than 167 years, Children’s Bureau has responded to the changing needs of the communities it serves. This has been made possible by the commitment of the people in each of these communities.
The Children’s Bureau story reveals how social circumstances and the ideological underpinnings of caring for children have changed.
“For the Children’s Sake” is a sesquicentennial book funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. in 2000 to focus on the agency’s evolution over 150 years.
This is more, however, than a history of the women and men who have led Children’s Bureau; it is also a history of the children and adults whose lives the organization has touched.
Our mission is to preserve families and protect the future of Indiana's children.
Guided by our vision of a healthy family for every child, Children’s Bureau’s highly-trained case managers identify and address issues that tear families apart. They do so in different ways: • Prevent - Empower families with professional support and community resources to eliminate issues that lead to entry into the child welfare system. • Intervene - Work with families who find themselves in the “system” to accomplish the required goals to keep their children. • Protect - Recruit and strengthen foster and adoptive homes. • Support - Mentor older youth transitioning from foster care to independent living.
Impact
The road of life is rarely straight and is never completely smooth. There are speed bumps, road blocks and U-turns. Children’s Bureau programs serve as a roundabout for families facing challenges in their journey. They may enter at any point and return if needed. Children’s Bureau strives to direct every child to a safe, healthier, happier family. No child or parent has to travel the road of life alone.
